Responsible business

Community

In the last year, employees gave over 2,700 hours of volunteering time to charity and community activities.

122 individuals were helped into work or self-employment.

We reached 1100 primary school children through our literacy initiatives.

Our approach

We believe it is important to help communities to thrive and to make a valuable contribution to where there is most need.  We also focus on social mobility, with the aim of laying the foundations of good literacy and improving the prospects of young people from low socio-economic backgrounds.

Our sponsorship of eXXpedition

With support from employee volunteers, we will deliver classroom-based workshops to bring the eXXpedition voyage to life and inspire young people to become active citizens and understand their role as a generation who can make positive change.

Environment

100% of the electricity in our London office is procured on a green tariff and we have lent our voice to RE100 to increase global demand for renewables.

In 2018 we removed over 650,000 single-use plastic items from our catering and waste operations.

We recycle 96% of our waste with the remainder going to energy recovery.

Our approach

The firm’s environmental programme is underpinned by our Environmental Policy and ISO certified management systems demonstrating our commitment to continually improve our environmental performance.

Our sponsorship of eXXpedition

We want to play a key role in raising awareness amongst our stakeholders of the significant issues caused by micro-plastics in our oceans.  Through events for our clients, staff and school partners, we will shine a light on the issue and aim to inspire positive change.

Inclusion

We have eight employee networks which collectively form a Network of Networks. Our aim is to foster a spirit of inclusion, both amongst the networks and the firm more widely.

We have entered into an exclusive partnership with social mobility charity, upReach, to launch the bespoke “Law Springboard” programme that will support 90 undergraduates from less-advantaged backgrounds.

We have developed a number of bespoke and collaborative cross-company mentoring programmes such as OUTstanding, 30% Club and EMpower.

Our approach

Diversity and inclusion is an integral part of how we do things as a firm.  We believe that a supportive and inclusive workplace drives collaboration and enhances business performance.

We focus our efforts on examining and adjusting the system for greater acceptance of different leadership styles and ways of working to support diverse individuals to navigate their careers.

Our people are drawn from different backgrounds and have different viewpoints.  This diversity of thought is crucial, which is why we aim to attract, recruit, develop and retain a diverse pipeline of talent.

Our sponsorship of eXXpedition

We will use eXXpediton to expand the dialogue beyond the business context and share stories about women’s empowerment and leadership through focused client and staff events.

Pro bono

We deliver annual legal training to help charitable organisations better navigate common legal issues, as well as publishing our Legal Essentials Toolkit for Charities, with 300 people having already accessed this information.

In the last year we have supported over 45 charities with pro bono legal advice.

Many of our initiatives have been running for over 20 years.

Our approach

The firm leverages its legal skills through pro bono support for increased and sustainable social impact.

Our pro bono work ranges from giving specialist legal advice to charities and non-profit organisations to supporting community outreach and programmes to assist individuals in need.

Our sponsorship of eXXpedition

We are providing pro bono advice to eXXpedition across a number of areas including structure, contracting and project governance.
